After seeing hundreds of topics on message boards with gamers being angry, happy, sad and even starting pentions about Square
not yet developing for the Gameboy Advance, I have decided to write this article with my opinion on the story behind this
whole conflict.
It all started back in the Nintendo days. Square was developing games for the NES and SNES that are now classics. The most known
of these games are the Final Fantasy and Secret of Mana series, and Chrono Trigger. Then one day... BAM! out of no where they left Nintendo for what is today Nintendo's main competitor... Sony.
Some people believe (correct me if I am wrong, this is something that I read a year a go.) that Square left because they made a tech demo of Final Fantasy 6 in 3D to show Nintendo, basically what
Final Fantasy 7 was going to look like for the Nintendo 64, and Nintendo pretty much laughed in their face and said "that sucks".
Little did Nintendo know that Final Fantasy 7 would eventually be a multi-million copy seller... man I bet Nintendo is kicking their
selves in the ass today. Others believe that Square left because they could make better games using Sony Playstation's CD based console system,
because CDs hold more space then cartridges.
But recently some news sources are saying that Square offered to develop games for Gameboy Advance. Apparently Nintendo said
yes but only if they would develop for their upcoming console, Gamecube. According to those sources Square said no because they
were only planning on developing for Playstation 2. But other sources say now that Nintendo just said no when Square offered to
develop for GBA because Nintendo wants to prove that a system (Gamecube and Gameboy Advance) can kick ass without the help of Square
and if they did welcome them back they were just admitting that they can't make successful systems without the help of Square.
In my opinion, I think Nintendo should have welcomed Square in a millisecond. Just think about it... Nintendo and Square
could make millions if Square ported such SNES series/games like Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Mana etc. On the
other hand, I believe Nintendo can pull of Gameboy Advance and Gamecube with their own series' such as Legend of Zelda and Mario. Plus, with
other companies coming out with (what looks like) awesome titles such as Golden Sun, Magical Vacation,
Super Street Fighter: Turbo Revival, Mario Kart: Super Circuit and many more who needs Square? Overall, I believe Nintendo and
Square will eventually come to good terms... key word... EVENTUALLY.
