PREVIEW - Golden Sun, is an turn-based battle RPG, that is set for an October, 2001 release later this year. It is obviously not complete yet, but this game by Camelot (the maker of Mario Tennis, Mario Golf, and the Shining Force series) already looks promising. Who needs Square when we got Camelot?

According to pocket.ign.com's analysis at Nintendo's Spaceworld (and the screenshots in this preview), Golden Sun's graphics and music are coming along nicely. The field map in the game is a top-down view that is used in most other RPGs. The turn-based battle view is a behind the back perspective that is a little askew (again much like Final Fantasy) and when characters are attacking it zooms in and out of action. The characters use weapons, and magic spells, to defeat their oppenents. Japanese translations of Golden Sun's story state this so far: Four hero's are sent out on a quest to save the world from a mysterious plague. Heidia, (a town in Golden Sun) is setup for unstoppable evil that only the four heroes can escape from and find away to end the terror in Heidia. The four heroes each have an Earth element as their power. The characters and their elements are as follows:
  • Ivan the wind elementalist
  • Mari the water elementalist
  • Gerald the fire elementalist
  • Robin the ground elementaslist

With mysteries surronding the multiplayer mode (link-cable and mobile adapter support) in Golden Sun (we are crossing our fingers), and a possible October, 2001 release, this game is shaping up to be a classic RPG, much like the classic SNES RPGs. Look for more details later.
